Tania Maria Correa Reis, pianista, cantora e compositora, nascida em São Luiz do Maranhão, em 9 de Maio de 1948 começou a estudar piano ainda menina,por influência de seu pai,também músico.
Na adolescência, ganhou um concurso oferecido por Ary Barroso,pois já se destacava por sua maneira de tocar.
Aos 2 anos de idade,deixou sua terra natal, e com a família foi morar na cidade de Volta Redonda, no estado do Rio de Janeiro.
Começa então uma carreira via Rio de Janeiro e São Paulo,onde já fazia apresentações em diversos clubes de Jazz.
Nesse período,ainda gravou discos como "Tania Maria e seu conjunto-Pra Dançar" e em seguida "Apresentamos Tania Maria" e "Olha quem Chega",mas não tiveram muita repercussão aqui no Brasil.
Nessas apresentações,foi convidada a inaugurar um clube de Jazz que seria aberto em Paris,e seus concertos resultaram em um grande sucesso e expressão na Europa,visto que seu estilo musical agradou muito mais ao velho continente.
Inacreditavelmente o Brasil perde Tania Maria. Ou melhor,não perde,mas deixa de ter.
Seus concertos então são vistos por um grande e exigente público que facilmente se rendeu ao rítimo e a identidade de Tania ao piano.
Seus improvisos no "Scat" e sua maneira as vezes ácida de tocar,mostraram que havia alí uma compositora cheia de emoções e notas inumeráveis ,sem falar de seu talento nato.
Seus álbuns começam a ser lançados na Europa (Barclay)e países como a Dinamarca e França registram trabalhos realmente diferenciados,onde se pode constatar uma artista totalmente dedicada ao seu ofício e realizando-o com prazer,para nosso inteiro prazer.
Já participando de festivais de Jazz,Tania assina então com uma gravadora Americana,que já estava atenta a este novo talento. Ela se muda então para os EUA onde assina com a gravadora Concord e lança álbuns como "Piquant" e "Taurus",entre outros,pois Tania Maria morou nos EUA até 1997,ano em que retorna a Paris,onde reside atualmente.
Hoje com mais de 25 álbuns gravados pelo mundo,Tania Maria faz há 30 anos concertos nos principais festivais de Jazz do mundo,como Tóquio,Nova Orleans e Nice,para platéias que vibram com seu carisma,simpatia e improviso no piano,além de suas letras repletas de inspiração em imagens e personagens que fazem ou fizeram parte de sua vida.
Sem qualquer tipo de apresentação no Brasil por 30 anos (pasmem,30 anos!),Tania foi convidada em 2005 para um projeto no Sesc Popéia,em São Paulo, chamado "Mulheres do Brazil", que apresentou cantoras e compositoras Brasileiras com carreira no exterior.
Suas duas apresentações deixaram de boca aberta, muitos Brasileiros que sequer tinham ouvido algo desta espetacular pianista e como já era hábito no resto do mundo,a platéia delirava com o que via,e no final todos queriam mais,encantados com o concerto.
Mas,ela voltou em 2007 e em 2008 para diversas apresentações no teatro FECAP,em São Paulo,para nosso deleite.
Hoje,seu nome ainda é pouco conhecido no Brasil,apenas uma pequena parcela conhece e admira seu trabalho.
Seus álbuns não são vendidos no Brasil,mas podemos achá-los na internet,pois as gravadoras são estrangeiras.

Internationally renowned for her exhilarating vocals and keyboard artistry, Tania Maria's music is a stylish combination of jazz, funk, Afro-Cuban elements, and the popular music of her native Brazil. She has created an eclectic fusion that is her own unique brand of jazz and appeals to audiences around the world. Maria’s raw alto has set her apart in the jazz world, her voice sounding sometimes bossa songstress, sometimes Brazilian soul singer.
Tania Maria was born in Sao Luis in the north of Brazil, in the heart of a family who practiced music with great enthusiasm. She quickly became sensitive to Brazilian tempo and rhythm. Beginning the piano at the age of 7, she finds herself six years later as the leader of a band who wins first prize in a local contest. She developed her own masterful synthesis of what she heard an effervescent style of piano work and rapid-tongued vocals in arrangements that fuse Brazilian rhythms and Caribbean salsa with the improvised expression that is the heart of American jazz.
Although 6 years of classical study underlie her solid piano technique, Tania Maria's highly praised vocal skills came naturally, “I'm Brazilian”, she says, “and singing is the greatest tradition we have!”. Well known for ebullient scat singing, she identifies herself primarily as a pianist. “I play percussion on my piano”, she explains, rather than smooth runs up and down scales. And she often scats in unison or harmony with the notes that flow from her touch, soaring beyond the constraints of words.
Tania Maria's first album “Olha Quem Chega,” was released in Brazil in 1971, but it was a move to France in the late 1970’s that exploded Tania onto the international scene, bringing her to the attention of Concord Records. At a concert in Australia, her formidable musical precision and freewheeling spirit caught the attention of the late American guitarist, Charlie Byrd, who recommended her to the late Carl Jefferson, founder of Concord Records.
A move to New York followed and in 1983 she released the album “Come with Me” on Concord Records. The title track of which became a huge international smash hit, and is still played in soul and jazz clubs all over Europe, Japan and America. Tania is an extraordinary improviser best known for her fiery interpretation of Brazilian, Afro-Latin, Pop and Jazz Fusion, in a style that is uniquely her own. Tania has played virtually every important Jazz Festival in the world and has appeared on countless television and radio programs.
Well established as an international veteran, with over twenty five albums out as leader, Tania has most recently entered a particularly productive period in her career, as evidenced on 2000's “Viva Brazil,” 2002's “Live At The Blue Note,” and 2003's “Outrageously Wild.”
These records were for Concord, but she has since signed on with other labels and has recently released “Intimidade,” on Blue Note, in 2006.This is the work of a mature, talented artist who's been around long enough to know how to make everything she does sound near perfect.
